WWI Political Cartoon

The Political cartoon represents how all of the other nations and world powers were trying to take down the United Sates. Also it shows how everything was tied up with the United States and the League of Nations in general. Reasons for World War I included nationalism of rising European nations, multiple newly put together alliances with the European nations (Austria-Hungary &Germany, Britain & Russia, Franco- Russian alliance etc..), and imperialism with Germany, Britain, and France. Also, militarism between Germany and Britain, and nationalism with majority of participating nations were additional reasons for WWI.
The United States wanted to remain neutral but began to get nervous from the rising monarchy in Germany. Unfortunately the red, white, and blue got dragged into the war for several reasons; particularly the sinking of the Lusitania by a German U-boat that carried 120 Americans. Also 7 of the United States merchant ships were sunk and even though we were ‘neutral’ we were supplying materials to our allies. Woodrow Wilson had enough, to war we went.

  1. I thought that the cartoon was depicting america being tied down by the L.O.N, as every country wanted added terms included. The USA would be bound to impose economic prohibitions and to sever diplomatic relations. The L.O.N would also limit the USA's government power. This was the common view held by many of the Americans at this time (1919) and was supported by many republicans including Henry Cabot Lodge.
