New Jersey v. T.L.O. (1985)

1.       The principal searched TLO’s purse and belongings without any permission from TLO. Just because he was suspicious doesn’t provide a reasonable situation for him to go through her belongings because the fourth amendment allows the person to be secure of their belongings.

2.       The Principal had every right to search TLO’s purse because the fourth amendment states that searches can’t be done under unreasonable situations, but the principal clearly had a reasonable situation to search her belongings after walking into her and her friend in the bathroom including evidence of selling marijuana and using it as well.

3.       By all means yes, searches are not to be allowed under unreasonable circumstances but this situation was clearly reasonable and all the evidence supported the search.

4.       I think the search like this one could occur in my school and should be allowed but I am not aware of my school’s rules pertaining to searches of personal belongings.

5.       The Supreme Court should prove her guilty because the search was a reasonable search and all of the evidence found in the purse shows she not only smoked marijuana but sold the drug as well. Proving her not guilty is poor ruling on the United States part of the situation.
